Our history
The initial capital of DKK 1,1 million was collected in Denmark and Greenland and presented as a gift on the occasion of the wedding of the Royal Highnesses The Crown Prince and The Crown Princess in May 2004.
In August 2006, Crown Princess Mary took the first steps toward the current Foundation by establishing “The Mary Foundation – HRH Crown Princess Mary’s Foundation”.
Subsequently, the Crown Princess and the Trustees concentrated on formulating the Foundation’s Charter and establishing a solid financial base. At our inaugural meeting in September 2007, The Mary Foundation had a capital base of DKK 73.6 million – the result of donations from the following eight co-founders:
- Carlsberg A/S
- LEGO Holding A/S
- Nykredit
- Det Obelske Familiefond
- Oticon Fonden
- Poul Due Jensens Fond
- Villum Kann Rasmussen Fonden
- TrygFonden smba.
Already in March 2008, The Mary Foundation launched our first focus area and corresponding project “Free of Bullying”, and three months later in early June, attention was drawn to our second area of concern, namely “Domestic violence”. Projects have subsequently been launched under the two mentioned headlines.
